LIVELIHOOD

At Safeguarding Children Initiatives, livelihood development stands as a central thematic pillar of our mission. We believe in empowering individuals and communities to achieve economic self-sufficiency, prosperity, and resilience. Through strategic programs that encompass vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and access to economic opportunities, we enable people to harness their skills and resources. Our dedication to livelihood development not only uplifts individuals from poverty but also fosters economic growth and stability within communities.

By investing in sustainable livelihoods, we contribute to a brighter and more prosperous future for all, aligning with our overarching goal of creating positive, lasting change.

n Nigeria, a significant proportion of the population grapples with poverty, with the majority residing below the international income poverty line. The Household Economy Analysis (HEA) baselines conducted across seven states in Northern Nigeria paint a stark picture, revealing that at least 74% of households fall into the category of the impoverished. These households, struggling to meet even their basic energy needs in a sustainable manner, are confronted with the dire consequences of chronic and acute malnutrition, particularly among children.

The SCII’s Food Security and Livelihood (FSL) sector has emerged as a crucial response to this pressing issue. The overarching goal is to enhance the livelihoods of the poorer households by bolstering their resilience to various shocks. To achieve this, collaborative efforts with partners are underway, focusing on several key strategies:

Increasing Household Income and Food Production: Implementing initiatives aimed at elevating the income levels of impoverished households. Enhancing food production capabilities to not only meet immediate needs but also contribute to sustainable livelihoods.

Promoting Availability and Accessibility to Agriculture Inputs: Facilitating access to essential agricultural inputs for households facing economic hardships. Removing barriers that hinder poorer households from benefiting from agricultural resources.

Enhancing Dietary Diversity and Food Consumption: Prioritizing child-cantered livelihoods to ensure the well-being of the younger generation. Encouraging dietary diversification to address malnutrition concerns and enhance overall food consumption for both children and their parents.

By strategically focusing on these key areas, the SCII’s FSL sector endeavours to break the cycle of poverty and malnutrition. The multifaceted approach not only addresses immediate challenges but also contributes to building sustainable, long-term solutions. Through collaborative efforts and targeted interventions, the initiative aims to uplift the livelihoods of vulnerable households, fostering a more secure and nourished future for children and their families in Northern Nigeria.
